Someone Like You.
Live music is one of the great true loves of my life. I know that sounds cliche or maybe a bit corny but, it's the truth. I've seen a lot of songs be sung, a lot of guitars strummed, and have dragged a lot of people to shows they probably didn't want to be at. Each one is amazing at the time, but most of the details slowly start to fade, just as most things in life do. Set lists blend together, special effects are forgotten. There are a few moments though that, no matter how many years go by, you remember them exactly as they were. This happens to me when I remember The Chicks singing Cold Day In July and it snowing inside America West Arena, Martina McBride singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow at Celebrity Theatre and it making me cry, being inside the stage at the Top Of The World Tour and hearing, "They said you wouldn't come, ...but we knew you'd come.", singing into a mic at the same time Grace Potter was singing into a mic right next to me, Sigh No More live, and this:
I saw Adele in Las Vegas last weekend and of all her songs, this was the one I was waiting for. I don't know if it's that piano, or that every single word is arranged perfectly, or how when she sings it, she always seems to be just a second away from crying. And sometimes does. Because when she sings this song, she means it. Every song, but I think this one especially. She is singing her life to the entire world. Brave is what that is. It was the perfect concert moment.
When she let us sing the last two choruses, I was singing and literally, every single person in the theatre was singing, I stopped for a second, looked around, and thought to myself that I have never, in all the shows I've been to, heard a crowd singing so loudly before. I haven't. I hope it made her happy.
Somebody closer and with a much better camera got her face while she let us sing & her mouthing the words back. :)))

The one where I have a major girl crush and here's why:
You know when you discover a band and you just immediately fall in love with them the second you hear them? And then, because you have a very endearing personality trait of not just loving something but becoming completely obsessed with it, you naturally ...become obsessed. They are all you can think about. All the time. Sometimes you sit at work from 3-4 am and you read everything they've ever posted on twitter for example. Is anyone else like this besides me and autistic children?
I've done this a few times in my life. First with the Dixie Chicks when I was 13, then with Sugarland when I was 20, and now with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals after discovering them randomly on iTunes back in July.
I. loooove. them. Where had they BEEN all my life? I feel like the music gods really screwed me over on this one. They've been around for years. Have played in Arizona at least four times I didn't know about. FOUR TIMES. And I missed them all. Whyyyyy music gods?!?!
And it's crazy that almost everybody I know has never even heard of them. It's a travesty really. I am legitimately pissed off that Kesha has songs all over the radio and they don't. (I will forever use Kesha as the god-awful artist example whenever I compare anything about music.) Grace could sing circles around her.
(sidebar. Can we just compare their song lyrics for a moment:
But, on the plus side of not a lot of people knowing about them yet (really, it's only a matter of time) is that when they do come here, I get to see them in a tiny bar, with only about 500 other people (including a drunk middle-aged couple who basically molested me from behind for two hours. It's a memory I'm really hoping my brain suppresses soon). We were as close to the stage as you can be without actually being in the band.
I'm high-fiving a million angels just thinking about it.
If I wasn't obsessed before seeing their show, I certainly am now. I know I've posted this in numerous different places since Wednesday but, it really was the best damn thing I've ever seen. Clearly, because I can't stop talking about it. I had heard they were amazing live, but to actually see it in person? I was blown away. Saying the girl can perform is the biggest understatement of my life. She was born to do it. That's it. And that voice. That bluesy, Janis Jopliney, raspy, rockstar voice. It paaaains me it's so good. I don't know whether I want to be best friends with her or BE her, but I love her and I wish I could just follow them around the country and go to every single show.
picturetime!! The set list. Something amazing: they play almost a completely different set every single night. What band does that?!? They only played five of the same songs that they played in their show the night before. That majorly impresses me.

Grace Potter:
This is the greatest time of day
When all the clocks are spinning backwards
And all the ropes that bind begin to fray
And all the black and white turns
This is the greatest time of day
When there's no you and there's no others
And all the rules grow wings and fly away
And all the black and white turns into colors
When all the clocks are spinning backwards
And all the ropes that bind begin to fray
And all the black and white turns
This is the greatest time of day
When there's no you and there's no others
And all the rules grow wings and fly away
And all the black and white turns into colors
Kesha:
D-I-N-O-S-A
D-I-N-O-S-A
You are a dinosaur
D-I-N-O-S-A
You are a dinosaur
An O-L-D M-A-N
You're just an old man
Hitting on me what?
You need a cat scan
...if only I could type out my facial expression right now.)

Oh, heeeey Grace standing only a foot away from me.
And then to top it off, during the very last song of the night, Cat turned her mic around into the audience and me and Jessie basically sang a duet with Grace during the chorus of Paris, ... and then I died.
A little video because pictures just don't do them any justice:
